My first thoughts on arriving the venue was that there was definitely going to be a big lineup outside Metropolis, considering how popular Deadmau5 is, and because of how many tickets were sold. I was very surprised when I got there and saw no lineup. I got in in only a matter of minutes. The staff working at the venue were clearly very well organized, and didn’t let a line pile up out front, which is really refreshing, considering how long the lines are for some shows.
I got there at about 8:30 pm, and the place was already at around half capacity, with the crowd already moving to the crazy beats. The first DJ I saw was playing high intensity electro, with some house mixed in here and there, and some remixes of song we all know such as “Move It Move It” and “Satisfaction”. The only fault I could put in his performance was that he recycled the same beat too many times for too many of the drops. The crowd didn’t seem to notice, but I found it pretty unoriginal.
The second DJ, Excision, was spinning pure, hardcore dubstep; in your face type of music. Once again the crowd was going insane and the place was at almost capacity at this point so as you can imagine the place was bumping. Unfortunately, I do not share the same love of dubstep that the crowd obviously did, so I didn’t see more than half an hour of his set.
Deadmau5 started his set blazing with mind-boggling visuals, some intense progressive house beats, and as the show progressed, he also threw in some great electro. Throughout the show, he wowed the crowd with his innovative sounds and clever beats, and the visuals seemed to get better as the show progressed.
I liked the fact that they saved all the really crazy visuals for deadmau5 (as would be expected) however I found that the intensity of the show was far too high, far too early and I personally think that great DJs like deadmau5 deserve Djs that will maybe keep the intensity a little bit lower and let the main DJ really bring the noise. Not to say that the DJs were bad or not qualified to open for deadmau5, just that they should’ve maybe toned it down a little bit in in the wee hours of 9PM.
All in all, deadmau5 gave an unbelievable performance and the show itself was great. Great organization, great DJs, and an excellent crowd with kick ass vibes the whole night. I for one can’t wait till Deadmau5 comes back to Montreal to see how he wows us next.
